What is the Gusto MCP Server?

The Gusto MCP server gives AI agents structured, permission-aware access to Gusto through the Model Context Protocol. With 22 pre-built actions, agents can read, create, and update Gusto data on behalf of authorized users.

Willow ships the Gusto MCP server as part of an enterprise control plane. Every call runs behind SSO (Okta, Azure AD), enforces RBAC and least-privilege at runtime, writes to a full audit trail, and integrates with Splunk and Loki for SIEM visibility. Connect from Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT, VS Code, n8n, or any custom agent. Install once, distribute org-wide, and see exactly how Gusto is being used by every AI agent in your stack.

Tools

Get Company

Retrieve detailed information about a company including basic details, locations, departments, administrators, and signatories. Use this to get a complete overview of a company's setup and configuration. You can optionally include related data like employees, admins, or signatories using the include parameter.

List Company Locations

Get all work locations for a company. Locations are critical for payroll processing as they determine tax liability and filing requirements. Each location includes address, filing requirements, and active status. Use this when you need to understand where a company operates or assign employees to locations.

List Company Departments

Get all organizational departments for a company. Departments help organize employees and contractors for reporting and management purposes. Each department includes its name, associated employees and contractors. Use this to understand company structure or for reporting and analytics.

List Employees

List all employees for a company with powerful filtering and search capabilities. Returns employees in all states: onboarding, active, and terminated. Filter by location, payroll, onboarding status, or search by name/email. Sort results by created date, name, or onboarding status. Optionally include related data like compensations, addresses, or custom fields. Essential for employee discovery and reporting.

Get Employee

Retrieve detailed information about a specific employee including personal details, jobs, compensations, addresses, tax information, and onboarding status. Use the include parameter to fetch related data like all compensations, home addresses, or custom fields. Essential when you need complete employee details for a specific person.

Get Employee Custom Fields

Retrieve all custom field values for a specific employee. Custom fields allow companies to track additional employee information beyond standard fields. This returns both the field definitions and the employee's responses. Note that only custom fields with user-provided values are returned; fields without values appear as empty strings.

Get Employee Home Address

Get the current home address for an employee. This is useful for payroll processing, tax calculations, and compliance purposes. Returns the employee's active residential address including street, city, state, and zip code.

Get Employee Onboarding Status

Check the onboarding progress and status for an employee. Returns detailed information about what steps have been completed, what's pending, and any blockers preventing onboarding completion. Useful for tracking new hire progress and ensuring all required information is collected before the first payroll.

List Employee Jobs

Get all jobs (positions/titles) for an employee. Each job represents a title, location, and pay rate. Employees can have multiple jobs (e.g., part-time in two different roles). Each job has associated compensations that track pay rate changes over time. Use this to understand an employee's roles and responsibilities within the company.

Get Job

Retrieve detailed information about a specific job including title, location, hire date, and current compensation rate. A job represents an employee's position and includes their current rate field which reflects the active compensation. Use this when you need specific details about an employee's role or pay structure.

List Employee Compensations

Get the compensation history for a specific job. Compensations define how much is paid for a job and track changes over time (e.g., merit increases, promotions). Multiple compensations can exist for one job, but only one is active at any given time. The rate field in the job reflects the current active compensation. Use List Employee Jobs first to obtain the job_id. Essential for understanding salary history and pay progression.

List Company Payrolls

List all payrolls for a company with advanced filtering options. Filter by processing status (processed, unprocessed), payroll types (regular, off-cycle, correction), start and end dates, or processed status. By default returns processed regular payrolls from the past 6 months. Essential for payroll reporting, auditing, and tracking payment history.

Get Payroll

Retrieve detailed information about a specific payroll including pay period, check date, payroll totals, and employee compensations. For calculated or processed payrolls, this includes detailed breakdown of gross pay, taxes, deductions, and net pay. Optionally include employee benefits data. Essential for reviewing payroll details and generating reports.

Get Payroll Employee Compensations

Get detailed compensation information for a specific employee within a payroll. Returns gross pay, hours worked, salary/hourly breakdown, bonuses, commissions, and other earnings for that payroll period. Use this when you need to see exactly what an employee was paid in a specific payroll run.

List Company Benefits

Get all benefits programs offered by a company. Company benefits are the plans that employees can enroll in (e.g., health insurance, 401k, FSA). Each benefit includes details about the type, coverage options, and employer contributions. Use this to understand what benefits are available before enrolling employees.

List Employee Benefits

Get all benefit enrollments for a specific employee. Employee benefits represent an employee's participation in company benefit programs. Each enrollment includes the benefit type, coverage details, employee deductions, employer contributions, and enrollment status. Essential for understanding an employee's total compensation package and benefit elections.

Get Employee Benefit

Retrieve detailed information about a specific employee benefit enrollment. Returns comprehensive details including the benefit type, coverage amount, employee deduction (amount and whether it's a percentage), company contribution details, active status, and whether it's elective. Use this when you need complete details about a specific benefit enrollment.

List Contractors

List all contractors for a company. Contractors (1099 workers) are managed separately from W-2 employees due to different tax treatment. Returns contractor details including name, type (Individual or Business), payment information, and onboarding status. Use this to discover all contractors or for contractor payment management.

Get Contractor

Retrieve detailed information about a specific contractor including personal/business details, payment method (direct deposit, check, or historical), tax information (W-9 status), address, and onboarding status. Use this when you need complete details about a contractor for payment processing or compliance purposes.

List Time Off Policies

Get all time off policies configured for a company. Time off policies define vacation, sick leave, PTO, and other leave types available to employees. Each policy includes accrual rules, limits, and eligibility criteria. Use this to understand what time off benefits are offered and their configurations.

List Employee Time Off Activities

List time off activity history for an employee (Gusto API: GET /v1/employees/{uuid}/time_off_activities). Returns policy-linked events such as accruals and balance changes for one type at a time. Required: employee_id and time_off_type ('vacation' or 'sick'). Call twice if you need both types. Note: The legacy company time_off_requests list endpoint is not available on API version 2026-02-01; this tool uses the supported activities endpoint instead.

Get Token Info

Get information about the current access token including granted scopes and accessible resources. Use this to verify what permissions your token has and which companies/resources you can access. Helpful for debugging authorization issues or confirming scope availability before making other API calls.

Enterprise Governance for Gusto

Willow adds the layer Gusto and every other SaaS doesn't ship out of the box: every call runs behind SSO (Okta, Azure AD), enforces RBAC and least-privilege at runtime, writes to full audit logs, and detects shadow AI usage across your stack. One MCP gateway. Any agent. Every tool.

Gusto MCP Server FAQ

What is the Gusto MCP server?

The Gusto MCP server is a Model Context Protocol implementation that lets AI agents like Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT read and write Gusto data through a standardized interface. Willow hosts and governs this server so enterprises can roll it out without a security review backlog.

How is Willow's Gusto MCP server different from the official one?

The official Gusto MCP server is scoped to a single user's account and does not include enterprise governance. Willow's version adds SSO, RBAC, audit logging, shadow AI detection, and centralized control over which actions agents can take across the entire org.

Which AI clients work with the Gusto MCP server?

Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT, VS Code with MCP support, n8n, and any custom agent built with OpenAI Agents SDK, LangChain, Vercel AI SDK, or Anthropic SDK.

Is the Gusto MCP server secure? How does Willow handle authentication?

Every call runs behind your existing SSO (Okta, Azure AD). Per-user OAuth scopes the agent to exactly what that user can do in Gusto, nothing more. No credentials reach the LLM. Every action writes to an audit trail.

Can I limit which Gusto actions agents can take?

Yes. Willow lets you scope agents to specific actions, specific projects, or specific environments. Toggle actions on or off in the dashboard, or enforce policy via infrastructure-as-code through GitHub.

How do I detect shadow Gusto MCP servers in my org?

Willow's browser extension and discovery service surface unmanaged MCP servers, skills, and AI agents across the org. If a developer installed an unapproved Gusto MCP locally, you'll see it.

What does the Gusto MCP server cost?

Pricing depends on org size and deployment model (SaaS, dedicated cloud, self-host). See withwillow.ai/pricing or contact sales for a quote.

How do I install the Gusto MCP server with Willow?

Install via the Willow Connect Panel in one click, or paste the JSON snippet above into your Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Claude Code config. SSO and RBAC inherit from your existing Willow setup.
